Starting from the mid 1980's up to the mid 1990's.


  •  1983, 1984, 1985, UK imports, by 'AMERANG', & 'Taylor and McKenna' & 'Jones Models' of Anime scale model kits Details 



  • MARCH 1984. Sees the first use in print, in the UK of the word "Anime"  (Issue 7 of the British magazine 'Space Voyager' February\March 1984 pages 10-11 entitled 'MACROSS – We look at the latest plastic kit craze from japan'.  Details  


  • MAY 1987. American imports to the UK of translated manga, printed in comic-book format and read Left to right. 
  • December 1987 American imports to the UK of translated manga, printed in comic-book format and read Left to right.

  • August 1988.  American imports to the UK of translated manga, printed in comic-book format and read Left to right.
  • JULY\AUGUST 1988.  Advertising the Monthly issues of AKIRA, that are in bookshelf format (Squarebound Paperback), and Colourised Issues in 1988. [NOTE: The 38 issue run, had two printing breaks, that last one was after Issues 31 to 33 printed between January and May 1992   ,and then produced the last 5 issues 34 to 38 in October 1995 to February 1996.]

  • Summer 1988. UK Fanzine MekTek 2 Cover Image 


  • September 1988.  American imports to the UK of translated manga, printed in comic-book format and read Left to right.
  • November 1988.  American imports to the UK of translated manga, printed in full colour,as a graphic novel, and read Left to right.    The publications of "FIRST COMICS" in 1987 and in 1988, issued this bespoke graphic novel "MAZINGER" made exclusively for the North American market, had a four page article by Frederick Patten on Go Nagai at the back of the publication  entitled  "Hypersexual Psychoviolence! "The dynamic world of Go Nagai" by Frederick Patten." Details & review 


  • December 1988. American imports to the UK of translated manga, printed in comic-book format and read Left to right.


  • April 1989.
     American imports to the UK of translated manga, printed in comic-book format and read Left to right. 
  • May 1989. American imports to the UK of translated manga, printed in comic-book format and read Left to right. 
  •  Summer 1989. UK Fanzine MekTek 3 Cover Image 


    • Wrote to the Editor of MekTek, on the 15th. November 1989 and got a reply on the 15th. of  January 1991.

    • So 2 Anime Fan contacts in England, in January 1990.

  • September 1989. The Letters page of the translated manga, Appleseed Book3 Volume 2  had the contact addresses for two American Anime Fan Clubs Earth Defence Command, Anime Hasshin, contacting these clubs led to other fans in the UK being known (in early 1990 there were 8 contacts in England).






  • December 1989 ROBOTECH II THE SENTINELS comic book Issue 13 (ROBOTAGAMI = PEN-PALS) 2 Pen-Pal contacts in England (Alan Russell & Martin J Payne )

The 1990's

  • February 2nd. 1990 Letter of reply from 'Anime Hasshin' with 2 members addresses from England.  [NOTE: July 1990 added 1 more British member from England, they were also an E.D.C. member earlier that year.]
  • March 2nd. 1990 Became a FULL Member of 'Anime Hasshin' .


  • April 6th. 1990 Received a reply from my second letter to the E.D.C. this kindly had names and addresses of others in the UK that were Anime Fans!  (a grand total of 7 British Fans! 4 of whom were members of the club, the other 3 were correspondents like myself) [NOTE: the first letter was sent to them after September 1989. so around 5 months to hear back, and get more contacts.]


  • Easter weekend April 14th & 15th 1990. held a Media Convention in London, with a dedicated Video room showing Anime hosted by Jay Felton.  ' ELYDORE '. Details.
  • Easter weekend April 14th & 15th 1990. held the British Science Fiction Convention, with a dedicated Video showings of Anime hosted by Helen McCarthy EastCon'90  Details 

    • [NOTE: I had 10 Anime Fan Contacts in England before going to the Easter Convention, and after that number of known Anime Fans from Helen's list increased to 26.]

  • April 1990.  I was faced with the news that I had a rare Cancer of the tongue (June 2021 Now with terminal throat Cancer, as I up-load to this Blog, and support the YouTube channel)

  • April\May 1990.    I decided to form a local Anime and Manga club. 'Anime Kyo UK', local showings, to East-midlands, to national (country-wide) to international Anime\Manga Fan club. Details  


  • May 1990. Picked up my first issue of the 'Console Mag'zine' -  A MONTHLY FANZINE FOR NEW VIDEO GAMERS.  (Editor Onn Lee) [NOTE: most likely from the Imported games shop in Nottingham were "City Hunter" was my first Anime game for my Japanese games console the "PC Engine"]


    • June\July 1990. Attendees that met at Easter Con '90, and other people interested in Anime, were sent a letter by Helen McCarthy, with the profound message “express an interest in anime fandom in the UK, and since it didn't really exist before EASTCON you're part of the setup crew!” , with the hope of setting up a news-sheet, and fanzine, and well as organising showings of Anime. the Total number of fans receiving this letter was 25, 26 if I include myself (3 of them could be contacted via MekTek, and another 2 from the EDC, making a total of 20 NEW fans to me).

  • September 23rd. 1990. At the United Kingdom Comic Art Convention (UKCAC), The 1989 Award for BEST International Comic Book (was published in ) went to AKIRA  by Katsuhiro Otomo.

  • September 1990. Join the British Star Trek Club U.S.S. ENDEAVOUR,  that featured a Special Interest Group of Japanese animation Fans called "ARCADIA" - run by Jim (James) Swallow.


  • October 1990. ANIMEUK Newsletter Volume 1 Issue 2; the newsletter had taken shape, and an additional 10 people, in the UK had subscribed to the Newsletter.  Details & review.


  •  December 1990. ANIMEUK Newsletter Volume 1 Issue 3; Details & review.


  • January 1991. A.K.N. (Anime Kyo News) Issue One - the Fan Club fanzine of Anime Kyo UK.


  • January 25th.1991. ICA in LONDON to be the  FIRST to show the Dub of AKIRA. Details,

  • February 1991 Issue 21 of Electronic Brain. - The Monthly'ish magazine for NEW game players.






  • March 1991 'ANIME DAY' The UK's first Anime convention. (One day convention) Details & report. 



  • March, April, May, 1991.   Screenings in Cinemas nationwide of AKIRA (with subtitles).

  • May 1991.  Handed out Flyers for Anime Kyo UK, at the Leicester screening of AKIRA.

  • June 1991. ANIMEUK Newsletter Volume 1 Issue 6 


  • July 1991, Ordering for September 1991, all things Comic book related from the Catalouge called "Advance Comics" (that's 2 months to pre-order);











  • July 1991. Traveled to a nearby town, to buy a Television that could show the PAL composite NTSC video signal.


  • August 1991. Anime Kyo UK, became the first and only UK chapter\affiliate of the U.S. Anime fan club the E.D.C. (for one year, as at the time I needed all the help I could get!).

  • [NOTE: This was after myself joining the E.D.C. in April-July of 1990.]


  • JAPAN DIGEST (Volume 2, Number 1 JULY 1991);


  • 1991  ; The UK's First dedicated Anime BBS (bulletin board system),
  • 'MEGA TOKYO 2032'.
  • [NOTE: at a time when BT (British Telecom) charged for local calls, and computers used dial-up modems at 14.4 kilobits per second, and taking the phone-line/landline over, as long as no one else picked up the phone on another extension.]


  • August 1991. ANIMEUK Newsletter Volume 2 Issue 1














  • [NOTES: ALBCON '9127th. to 30th. September 1991, at the Central Hotel GLASGOW, Scotland.  (four days of SCIENCE FICTION entertainment) - Contact K. Heenan, 2/1 1155 Pollokshaws Road, Shawlands, Glasgow G41 3NG. - I was in support to Jay Felton in running and maintaining the Anime video room, over the 4 days at AlbCon '91. and promoted the convention in Anime Kyo UK's club magazine AKN, issue 2 June 1991.]


  • October 11th. to November 9th. 1991 The Exhibition 'Manga, comic strip books from Japan' - curated  by Adam Lowe, at the Pomeroy Purdy Gallery, London.
    • The accompanying  Exhibition soft-bound book 'MANGA'  ISBN 1 87318402 6  had a print run of 2000.
