May 1990 Pt.4 Animag 10

With all my efforts on giving the reader the whole view over time, of my journey with the start of the UK's Anime & Manga Fandom getting the facts of the dates historically correct has been paramount and a driving force. With this in mind, the printing of Animag #10 in1990 looks to be May of that year going by the advertisements of 'Horizon' (Dirty Pair -May, Markalite (the magazine of Japanese Fantasy) Issue #1 JUNE 1990, SF2. (San Francisco Science Fiction) - The Garage Kit Network (model shop) with its 20% off that ends on 15th. July, and Stargate (model shop) at Project A-KON JULY 28 – 29.

[NOTE: my conclusion of when Animag #10 was printed does not tell the reader when in the UK I picked this issue up, it may have been a year later, in March of 91.]

What follows is a very brief overview and reappraisal, of this issue that is centred on Science Fiction and Japanese Mecha, all but one small article on a four part OVA soon to be relesed (at the time) entitled Mosaica (giving its full title Heroic Armor Mosaica) a fantasy, about a young warrior called Wu Talma (U-Taruma) who make a stand against the murderous conquest that has befallen the land, in the hopes of awakening the ancient giant warrior to aid him.

[NOTE: Mosaica's full title Heroic Armor Mosaica was supplied by a member of the Jarod Nandin's Vintage Anime Fans group on Facebook, very little in English is found about this 4 part OVA]

Trish's editorial gives us an insight into the love of a language and Japanese culture in this popular medium of animation, and even her remembering – back in those days “the days when you watched everything, when all animation was new and wonderful and you embraced it with equal favour” seeing so many shows that were produced and aimed at Japanese high school boys (aged from 10 to 18) that was an out-let counter to what Japanese society expected with “tales that relied upon the sadly overused revenge-seeker-whose-loved-one-has-been-slain-by-the-bad-guys storyline”.

March 1990 Pt.3 Animage magazine.

This is the third example of a Japanese Anime magazine that I will use as an introduction to show you the contents and style through a set of photos of this Japanese Anime Magazine “Animage”.

Animage Published monthly by Tokuma Shoten Publishing Co., Ltd. Consisting of 212 pages (including the front & back covers). #3 March 1990 ( Volume 141).

The contents of this magazine, has not been translate by me. All I really could glean was from the few English words and the recognizable animation stills, and illustrations, and to quote a good friend of mine “We all just looked at the pictures but blimey; What pictures!! “

[Note: Little did I know at the time, that 'Animage' ran the infrequent serialization of the comic-book 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind' Written and illustrated by Hayao Miyazaki, one of my all time favourites!]

Those Lovely Angels....

Well what do we have hear?!

[Note: Tokuma Shoten Publishing Co., Ltd being one of the biggest entertainment publishers of their time and that they were Studio Ghibli parent company you do see Manga and novellas printed in Animage also produced as animation.]

Animage serialized the novella “I Can Hear the Sea” by Saeko Himuro as an insert (in a paper size not unlike A5). Most of us Westerners that were Anime & Manga fans did not read Japanese, so we missed out on the details of stories.

Comic-books in the 80's Pt. 20

Dirty Pair. Written by Toren Smith & Adam Warren and illustrated by Adam Warren - (based on characters and situations created by Haruka Takachiho). Eclipse Comics published in a monthly format for a total of 15 issues, from June 1989 to March 1990 .

The first 4 novels where originally published between 1980 and 1993 in SF Magajin by Tor Books.

[Note:Dirty Pair #1-5 (June 1989 to October 1989) - Dirty Pair II #1-5 (November 1989 to March 1990) - The Dirty Pair (III) #1-5 (April? to August? 1990 ).]

[Note:Dirty Pair book One: Biohazards (a collection collection of the first series), Dirty Pair book Two: dangerous acquaintances (a collection collection of the second series), The Dirty Pair (III): A Plague of Angels (a collection collection of the third series 1990).]

The cry of “It's not our fault!” as the impact of Manga and Japanese cartoons gained a foothold in the US of A, Toren Smith founder and translator at ' Studio Proteus' acquired rights to create comic-book versions of The Dirty Pair in a joint project with Adam Warren who wrote and drew the comic-books (quoting Fred Burke).

This very popular Space Opera that takes place after the year 2138 and follows Two "trouble consultants" agents of the 3WA (World Welfare Works Association), and their fierce cat-like being “Mughi” (an electronics expert among other-things), Kei and Yuri codenamed the “Lovely Angels”, but more commonly referred to as the “Dirty Pair” due to the destruction left in there wake (Some times on a Planetary scale, such is other people's misfortune) after completing their mission.

A fun read!
