My own personal journey (as a fan in England) was picking up an imported Manga-Comic-Book issue of the translated Manga 'Appleseed'.

EARTH DEFENSE COMMAND
What, you may ask, is the Earth Defense Command?
We exist to support, promote and propagate the cause of truth, justice, animated film and video!
Anime is not just for kids anymore, but a dramatic medium in its own right.
The Dallas based EDC is one of the oldest (c.1982) and most established national organizations of animation fans in the USA.
Our purpose is twofold, our motto:
Meet new people; make new friends
2. Publish Nova
NOVA
We're affiliated with many fan groups all over the country. We can put you in touch with a group near you. Some groups meet, watch different programs, and publish additional newsletters and fanzines.
You can find out about almost any program you're interested in. Nova, the zine of champions, is published twice yearly.
With more than twelve issues under its belt so far, Nova now boasts 40-plus pages per issue, and often includes special inserts. It's packed with fantastic art, stories, poetry and articles about japanime and other animated subjects.
Whispers of Iscandar is the official news vehicle of the EDC. Published alongside of Nova or as often as needed, Whispers leaks choice information about new releases and translations, club events around the country, and miscellaneous tender tidbits of none-of-the- above! Back issues, scripts and synopses are also available, & inquiries answered.
Give us a chance - you'll be glad you did! Meet new people and make new friends who share your interest in animation! How much to subscribe?
Only 8 bucks. 8 bucks--What a deal! For 8 bucks you could take a friend to the dollar flicks and thence to McDonald's, (fugitive pleasure indeed), or you could savor 80-plus dense pages of news, imaginative art and fiction submitted by creative people across the country for an entire year! ZOUNDS! What's your pleasure?!

Dear Carlo:
Thank you for your recent inquiry into the Earth Defense Command (EDC). I'm sorry your other letter never recieved a reply, but I don't recall receiving a letter form you. I guess the overseas mail ate it or it somehow got lost. Anyway, I'd certainly be happy to answer your questions about the club.
Let me start with some information on the EDC: We've been around since late 1981, began as a group devoted to Star Blazers, but soon grew to encompass all of Japanese animation, and now also other forms as well. We cover all of the various programs and more. We also have interesting info on Star Blazers, and Japanese animation is still our main area of coverage.
We publish a semi-annual fanzine (NOVA) which is filled with synopses, fan fiction, artwork, poetry, and serves as a creative outlet for our subscribers. We also publish a newsletter (WHISPERS OF ISCANDAR) which covers internal club news, chapter happenings, new releases, general anime news and information, where you can get stuff, and other items of interest in this vein. I will enclose a flyer for your further information regarding these publications and the cost of them.
The EDC has several affiliate groups and chapters located around the U.S.; some hold meetings, some have their own publications, and their own activities.
I will enclose a list for you to see if any are in your immediate area. Feel free to contact any of the people on this list, be sure to let them know where you heard about them.
We also encourage starting your own affiliate or chapter if you find that you'd like something closer to home. We can offer you help and guidance in getting this started, and offer all the support we can. If you would like to find out more about this option, please don't hesitate to ask.
The EDC currently has chapters and affiliates in Georgia, California, New Jersey, Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, other areas of Texas, etc.
It really doesn't take much to get started, it doesn't take as much time as one might think, and if you're at all interested, let me know.
We offer tape trading services, and our main organizer of that is
Jeff Blend, 1708 Arvada Dr., Richardson, TX 75081. Send him a SASE and ask for his videotape list. To be polite, you might also want to send Jeff a quarter, in addition to the SASE, to cover the cost of his copying the list and rules, but it's not mandatory.
Jeff is taking a break from the actual physical work of taping, however, he's happy to send you his list, a and will refer you back to me for the actual order, as I'm helping coordinate that for awhile.
Jeff is currently doing no taping. We'll do tapes for you whether you are an EDC member or not so long as you don't sell the copies for profit or give them to anyone who does sell copies for profit.
We have problems with that these days, and are strictly anti-piracy.
We charge nothing for videotape copies of stuff, (which is why we don't like to see others make money off our copying or subtitling work, besides that, it's not exactly legal to sell copies for profit and we don't want trouble), and all we ask is that you supply the tape and return postage. What a deal, eh?
We also have penpal listings, and we try to put people in touch with others who share their particular interest (like favorite show, or favorite aspect of shows, i.e. mecha, characters, music, etc.) so no one has to ever feel like they're out there all alone.
We try to be a fun, family-oriented group (meaning we're all like friends and family to each other) and as such, are non-political in nature (as much as is humanly possible) as we feel fandom is for fun, not bickering.
Page two of two;
If you ever get the itch to write or draw, Nova and Whispers accepts submissions of material from anyone who wishes to pick up a pencil (crayon, lipstick, anything that makes legible marks on paper) and write or draw something. We have a letters column for opinions and comments in Nova, an advertising section for people wishing to locate, sell, buy items, etc., if you're interested in those types of things, and don't wish to do actual articles. We try to furnish something for everyone.
We are listed in the fan organization areas of Starlog, Animag, and the Fandom Directory, in addition to letters from our members and Affiliate Organizers in comics such as Star Blazers #4, Area 88 #32, and most recently Appleseed Vol. 3 #2, as we're beginning to build a larger nationwide and international reputation.
The EDC also has various activities, mostly within a given local area, and we (and our affiliated groups) are often associated with area conventions, parties, video showings, etc. We're trying to be a very active organization. We'd welcome your enthusiasm.
We don't currently do anything in PAL VHS, however, we're more than willing to put you in touch with other British members who might have access to such machines, who are currently in contact with us, or who are members and who get video from us. Some of them I'm sure can help you out.
Enclosed is a list for you to contact. I hope you don't mind if we also give your name out to other British fans looking for contact persons to write to. If you do mind, let me know and we'll take your name off this list.
I think I've given a basic idea of what we're like, and I've probably bored you to tears with this long letter. We'd welcome you becoming part of the family. If you have any other questions, I'd be glad to try to answer them for you.
We hope to hear from you soon. Again, thank you for your interest, and if there is anything else we can do for you, please let us know.
In fun and fandom,
Kelli Wakefield

PS. Here also is a copy of a flyer for our own animation convention we're doing in late summer. [PROJECT A-KON]
If you can attend, we'd welcome it, as we're trying to make it an EDC world convention if at all possible.
If you don't think you can make it, please pass the flyer around to anyone you know who might be interested.
In the future we may make tee-shirts available commemorating the convention and you might be interested in purchasing one of those. We think it will be a lot of fun, and thought you might like to know about it.

HINTS ON STARTING A CHAPTER OR AFFILIATE GROUP
Note: The difference between a Chapter and an Affiliate is basically just terminology. Some groups prefer to be called Chapters, liking the family feeling of belonging to a greater whole, while others like the more independent term 'Affiliate' better. It really doesn't change their relationship with us, it's a choice for the people of the group to make for themselves. Some chapters like to use the old way we used to name chapters - after space warships (Space Battleship Musashi II, Spacecraft Carrier Tokimatsuri, Space Destroyer Dominion, Space Passenger-liner Titanic, etc. so that the one style of of naming indicated that they were chapters of the EDC. It's entirely up to you.) There are are all kinds of possibilities...we almost had a Space Battleship Bullwinkle, once upon a time!
1. Pick a name for your group. It can be almost anything, but remember that you are representing anime in general, and yourselves and the EDC in particular, so don't be too outrageous unless this is the reputation you want to get.
2. Decide if you are going to hold meetings, and then find some place to hold them. Try libraries, banks, recreation centers, even colleges if any any of your members are in college, student union buildings are good. You might even get a college to help sponsor you, meaning you could use their theaters for anime showings, etc.
3. Make flyers advertising your group. Put them in the above mentioned places, and anywhere that eclectic people hang out. Soda shops, comic comic shops, libraries, schools, bookstores, heck, the local malt shop or record shop or pool hall can even work. Mail them to your friends, hand them out on street corners (it's been done before!) just GET THE WORD OUT.
4. Get involved in local conventions. Hold a video party somewhere. .Hold any party somewhere. Build your reputation.
5. Decide if you want to a)charge local dues b)publish a newsletter of your own c) organize any group events for fund raising or such things as this. Go as a group to a museum, theater, a planetarium, an amusement park, anything. Just get your people interested and active and feeling like you're a lot of fun to be with.
6. Advertise the national EDC if possible (of course I had to stick a plug in somewhere, didn't I?)
7. We can offer you all the taping services you need, and offer contacts for getting others from around the country as you might want them.
Note: Please don't send us 10 tapes a week before your next meeting and ask us to fill them to fill them at 6 hr. speed and mail them back to you for your meeting. This just can't be done. We hate to disappoint our membership, and ask that a.....
Dear Carlo:
I love the idea of your starting a club in the U.K. Yes, if you applied for affi- liateship with the EDC you would be our first in the U.K. Quite an honor! Enclosed is an application for you to fill out if you wish to become an affiliate or chapter of the EDC. Also, tell me whether you want to be called an "affiliate" or a "chapter". There is no difference as to how you are treated by us, just that when we list you, we use that term, and some people like the closeness associated with being called a 'chapter' (like you're part of a larger whole) while some like the term 'affiliate' as sounding like a loose association. Whichever you prefer, we'll still do all the things for you we do for all the other chapters & affiliates, including referrals from all over the place. After you're accepted (I don't see why you wouldn't be) I will immediately place your group on the referral list I send to all people inquiring about the EDC. Great job, glad you're doing it!
We have only a couple requirements for affiliates & chapters
(1) have at least one member who is a subscribing member of the EDC so the info contained in Whispers & Nova can be spread out to the other members of your group, and
(2) you oppose for-profit copying of tapes and don't knowingly deal with people who do deal with copying for profit. That last one is important, but I don't think you do deal with those kinds of people anyway, so there shouldn't be a problem there.
(3) This does not mean you can't accept donations for machine maintenance etc., but is can't be a mandatory requirement for getting tape copies. That would be classified as 'profit'. So does 2 for 1 trading (sending 2 blanks and getting 1 back with stuff copied), mandatory subscription fees for copying services (this does not include subscription fees for publications or membership in the club itself), and anything that exclusively targets the tape copies as the thing being paid for in some manner. Again, I don't think you have any problems here, as you don't do such things, and it's difficult enough to get tapes in the U.K. without compounding it with pirating problems. And why pay for stuff you can get for free anyway?
Okay, enough preaching. Just fill out the form and you will be considered the first official EDC affiliate/chapter in the United Kingdom. Quite an honor, eh? (I'm joking, of course). If there is anything else we can do for you, or if you need anything, let me know and we'll do our best to help.
I know we can't do stuff in PAL, but there are places (and people) who are getting stuff from us and then having it translated to PAL over there. But unfortunately, some of the stuff they're getting it at the longest speed we have (6 hr.) and may not copy well unless sent through an enhancer. The best we can do is 2 hr. speed, which loses very little in the copying. We have no 4 hr. capabilities, the machines here don't take that speed any more (unless you have a real old machine - the new ones only work in 2 hr (SP - 120 min) and 6 hr (EP - 360 min) speeds. I know this gentle- man by the name of Brian Flanigan sent us some tapes and wanted stuff on them, but the speeds he wanted didn't work out with our machines, so I just sent him the best and the most stuff I could and explained the differences in timing.
Your PAL tapes will work on our machines, but while you have 240 tapes, we have 120 as the standard length tape, and our speeds aren't the same, so it's not really 240 minutes for us. It is about 3 hrs. at SP speed if we use one of your tapes.
The differences isn't in the magnetic media itself, tape is tape, the difference is in the calibration of the speed of the turning wheels and the length of the tape itself. I tried to watch a tape a friend sent me from Britain that she wanted taped over, and it had old Dr. Who on it. My machine played it, but it was so fast it was like watching the Chipmunks! The picture was like on continuous Fast Forward, and the picture was somewhat garbled. It was very strange!
I must be getting back to my convention work now. Only 10 days before the con! Sheesh! I've 1,000,000 things to still do! Thanks for the interest and good luck on your chapter/affiliate!

Dear EDC Chapter or Affiliate,
I am working with Keli Wakefield and EDC to increase the amount of support EDC gives to it's affiliates. The first question I asked was "What do you get by being an affiliate?" then "How much does it cost?" etc...
The answers to these questions have been buried in EDC HQ for quite a while. My goal is to make the answers common knowledge to our current affiliates and easily obtained by prospective groups. I also want to increase the amount of interaction between EDC's affiliates, and work out some sort of general news & information source we can all use.
To accomplish this goal I decided first to put together a booklet entitled "EDC's Guide to Anime Fandom" that that will include precise information about EDC's goals, organization, and Affiliateship program and also general information that a new club coordinator could use to help his club grow. I would also like to include: A directory of all the EDC chapters, Addresses of non-affiliated clubs, Pen-Pal addresses, Sources for anime products (CD's, Laser Disks, Models, etc...), Addresses of the many anime magazines published in America, and any other info available. (Of course this sould have to be updated yearly.) I also plan to include as much information about US copyright laws as well as Japanese copyright laws on tape duplication. If you have any articles or addresses that would be usefull, please send them to me. Also I would especially like to print a lengthy description of each affiliate's club activities. Please send me info on your club.
The reason I am writing you about this is that I would like to hear ideas on what we should be doing. Would you be willing to pay a fee of say $12 a year if you could get a subscription to NOVA plus the booklet described above? Is there anything else you would like to see in the booklet? How many of your members have computers? Computers w/ modems?
Please use the included envelope to reply. I hope to have a rough draft copy before Project A-Kon II.
Thank You,
Robert Jenks

EDITOR'S PRIVILEGE
What, you may ask, does this mean? Well...this means it's my little column to talk, bemoan, brag, or otherwise communicate what's going on for the time period covered by this fanzine.
I can talk about A-Kon....but you've probably gotten sick of it. I can talk about A-Kon 2, which by the time you get this, will have already happened.
I can bemoan the computer illness and personal 'real life' situations that prevented me from producing this thing any faster than this.
I can brag about the fact that in June I will have a new last name (and no, it's no shorter than Wakefield, and it's harder to spell..so there!) which is another reason this zine is so darn late - weddings are amazingly time consuming, and so is the second job I have to help pay for it, and the fixing of the busted computers at work, which I use to make Master Printouts of the zine! And I can otherwise communicate what's going on in the pages of this zine, for your enjoyment (or boredom).
My sincerest apologies for the length of time between zines. I can only try to not let that happen again, but sometimes life and the realities of survival interfere in our fun now and again.
To wit, there is some little titbit of info on A-Kon 2 at the end of the zine, and there will be some info in the accompanying Whispers of Iscandar (God willing and the 'puter doesn't fry again!).
Returning for this issue is the newest instalment of The New Dirty Pair (to the delight of some of you). There is the first installment of a new series of Ranma 1/2 manga translations from new friends in Utah (yes, the cover art does somewhat focus attention on world events, those really ARE German words on Kei & Yuri's outfits).
This is a big issue, but you all deserve it! Thanks for your support, and your patience. DEADLINE FOR NEXT NOVA IS: OCT 15, 1991! Maybe we can get the next one before 1992!
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS THING?
Editor: M. Kelli Hazlewood (yeah, I got married!). Typist-extrordinaire-beyond-the-call-of-duty: Jeff Blend Graphics instructor and computer wrangler: David Hazlewood. General writers & artists.......read the table of conents and look for art credits in the back. Cover Art: Bruce Lewis.
Thanks to all who put forth effort to bring this piece of fannish literature to your info & entertainment-seeking eyes. Pop a cool one, kickback and relax with this good book NOVA (c) 1991, EDC Animation Society.

YES, IT'S REALLY...NOVA 15
LETTERS TO NOVA
Note: Due to limited space, some of the letters here have been edited. Where "...." either begins or ends a section of letter, it Indicates there was other text either before or after the section used in this column, probably because it was a Nova comment couched within personal letters or items that do not concern Nova or the EDC specifically. We're not trying to be censors, but do you REALLY want to read several pages of automobile, software, fashion & home decorating discussions in this zine? I thought not.
"Dear EDC:
...Jeff Blend and the tape traders are great. My friends & I have
some subtitled stuff we're sending to him. Thanks alot.
Keith D'Arcy, Narragansett, RI
"Dear Kelli:
Here's issue #1 of our newsletter. It's finally done Whew! Please let me know what you think! All our other projects are moving ahead
too.
I got Nova (#14), Shonen Wildstar & Whispers. Decent! I liked the color cover on Shonen and the cover of Nova, too! The Whispers format improved so much between this one and the last one, even without pictures. As for 2 or 3 column (format), keep two and three. Use three for letters, stories and scripts, but two for articles, editorials and reviews.
"You say Shima, I say Mark Venture I say Argo, You say Yamato, Let's call the whole thing off”
-Late 21c. song lyric Mike C. Zalot, Space Battleship Artemis,
(EDC affiliate, New Jersey)
**Thanks for the letter, Mike, and for your opinions on the Nova format. It DOES make a difference what you folks think, after all you're the ones reading it. Your newsletter is a nice piece that should get your group off to a grand start-any- thing you do in print somehow validates your group's existance like saying "here we are" to the general public. Keep up the good work!**
"Hello Kelli:
It's me, Ken. Here is chapter seven of my story "The Untold Story". I hope you like it. I have also included a comic strip I did satirizing Star Blazers. If possible I would ask for the comic to be printed in the regular Nova rather than in the comics supplement. I'm afraid some of the detail would be lost in many of the panels if they were reduced in size.
I did the comic as a test. It is an adaptation of the first (American) episode. If the reader- ship likes it I will adapt more episodes until the first season is finished. Then, I will start the second season, the movies New Journey and Be Forever, third season, and finally Final Yamato. But I want to see if the Nova readership likes the first episode before I start on what promises to be a daunting project. (Is that big enough a hint for feedback? Or should I offer cash?)
I have to say the latest Nova was the best so far. The gloss cover, the binding, the typesetting, everything belies a truly professional job! Cudos to the staff at the EDC. Good work, people. I am proud to have my work appearing in your publication and for years considered it a major goal in life (there, was that enough. buttering up?).
Until next issue....may all our Gamilons be friendly, your tribbles sterile and your VCRS trouble-free.
Sincerely,
Ken Mays, Denton, TX
**(sigh) Gee, what a nice letter! Kinda gets ya right here (gesturing at heart). As Ken requested, (and I agree totally), his comedic comic adaptation appears in this issue. It wouldn't have reduced well at all - and the detail is something you NEED to see! Personally, as far as feedback, this is it, dude! I LOVE IT! MORE, MORE, MORE (no it's NOT a Billy Idol Imitation!) - It's one of the funniest things I've seen in years! Smacks of the old Saturday Nite Live parodies on Trek they used to do way back when. (Can't help it, once a Trekker, always a Trekker). For you folks who want to give Ken his much-begged-for feedback personally, please write to him at this ad- dress: Kenneth Mayes, Apt. 2218-A, 3300 Fallmeadow, Denton, Texas 76201. Send cash if you really want to see more stuff- that's the surest way I know of enticing a starving student/artist! Seriously, though, it's really good stuff which we're proud to include with our publication!. kw**
WARNING, THIS IS AN A-KON LETTER WARNING
Howdy Meri: (once again, yes, folks, Kelli's first name is Meri)
Just wanted to drop you a note to reiterate my thanks and throw a couple of ideas at you. I really enjoyed A-Kon IMMENSELY. It was really a great con. I think there were a few things that made is so for me: (1) having only a few guests, while maybe not attracting as many con goers as we would have liked, it gave people a much better chance to get to know me. That is important to me and my career. At the Fan- tasy Fair I felt I was lost in a continually expand- ing legion of comicbook talent.
(2) I feel that my panels and especially the A-Kon Komic were quite successful.
I was surprised at how much I was able to inform people, I am not a good "speaker" so I tried to stick with discussing topics with people, it seemed to work. Well the A-Kon Komic is just magic. I am still impressed that so many people were so eager and so willing to work on it. Kat Hostetter was a great help. it would not have happened without her. I figure that the Komic should have brought in $40+ dollars for the con!
(3) The feeling of friendship or quaintness, where everyone was friendly and familiar. I think you did an excellent job with this. There were so many little things like: the different badges, the names of the rooms, the birthday cake, the dance, and the low and accessible price of admission, and the art show and the like. Randy (Stukey) thinks the con could grow to three times this size and still keep this feeling.
I have had a few ideas about A-Kon, assuming there is another (hope and pray).
(1) Make the Dirty Pair guest stars, no offense to any of the guests there, but they were as much an attraction at the con as any of the guests.
Advertising this on promo flyers would surely bring in more people. You might even be able to get one of the many pictures taken of them half toned for a flyer. If you really wanted a strong promo for the con you cold bring them in for a Fantasy Fair and have them make one QUICK sweep through the con passing out flyers to everyone then leave immediately. (If you consider this, contact me because I have some ideas on organizing a sweep through.)
(2) Maybe try to get guests like Jason & John Waltrip, artists on the Robotech comics from Eternity, Tim Eldred writer/penciler Broid and penciller Lensman and more (hee hee), or some peoples from Viz.
(3) Keep up the folkiness, maybe do stuff like give a prize for attendee who came from the furthest away.
Well that's it for now. Once again thanks! Just let me know if there is going to be a Project A-KOn 2 and I will be happy to help out in every way I can.
Wishing you peace & happiness!\ Steve Krueger (inker-Broid, Chaser Platoon, and others!)
**See, I warned you there might be an A-Kon letter or two in here! And from one Wonderful! of the guests even! Neat ideas, too!
One of the reasons we didn't have some of the people he mentioned is that we were one week away from San Diego Comic Con, which many people had already scheduled to attend, and couldn't work us in too.
Project A-Kon: The Next Generation (May 25-26, 1991) won't conflict in this manner. It's hard not to conflict with some con somewhere in the country no matter when you do a convention.
THIS IS A PLUG; A-Kon Komics ARE still available, at a low, low price of $1.00 for the set of three (the extra quarter covers your postage), the proceeds of which will go into the next A-Kon fund. Also, we have reprints of the program book available, minus the card cover and colored paper, but the text and Interior art are identical. Price for this is $1.00 also, postage included. The originals were $1.00, but they had colored card covers, so it's not fair to charge the same price. Proceeds again, go into the next A-Kon fund. Get YOURS today! Thanks! kw**
Kelli-
...I do have a suggestion that would be orginal to the issue, though (if everyone goes for it): you can have someone start a story plot and can have everyone contribute to it! (Example: You start a story and have it leave off for next issue Jeff Blend continues it/ next issue ( continue it, etc.) What do you think? Well it's just an idea that way, if I start a story and get bored, someone else continues it. For some reason I never get bored with other people's writings....
-Carol Brown
**That is an interesting idea - anyone up for it? The things are called 'round robin' stories or 'continue the stories'. Sounds like fun, but would you lose track of what had gone before? Anyone have opinions?
-kw**

YES, IT'S REALLY...NOVA 15
AREA 88
Dear Kelli,
Do you have any information on Japanese live action shows? I am looking for "Johnny Sokko" and his high-tech Giant robot. Do you have the Hobby Japan's 1990 Garage Kit Catalogue on Giant Robot kits? Any information you can help me with would be appreciated.
Thank you.
James M. Hendrickson, 9210 Stanhope Rd., Kinsman, OH 44428.
** Well, I don't know anything about the show, but maybe one of our readers will and will send you some info. How about It, folks?
-kw**
"Yo Kelli:
The latest Nova looks really slick. The color cover on Shonen Wildstaris great. I'd love to be able to contribute to Shonen but school is keeping me too busy for any kind of outside activities. I hope I'll have time over X-Mas break to do something...
"Dan Ross"
**Well, Dan, seems you had time at the end of one of your letters to do an idea of what you think Earth Monitor Station-1 might look like. I just found the art piece and have Included it with this issue. Thanks for the good thoughts and thanks for tryin!
-kw**
"Dear Kelli,
...Before closing, I'd like to comment on the newsletter formats. Whispers looks fine with no artwork and 3 column format. It seemed to me to better distinguish the two newsletters apart. The 3 columns also worked well in Nova but some parts looked good with 2 columns, so I'll have to vote for the mixed format on that one. I haven't had time to read everything yet but so far have especially enjoyed the City Hunter manga translation, A-Ko song translations and the Kimba episode guide (I remember watching that show often)... Brad Hoffman"
**Unfortunately, I also remember watching Kimba. Dates us, doesn't it? kw**
"Dear Kelli:
I just got my Nova 14 and it's excellent! The stories are great, the artwork is great. But I didn't get a membership card with it so I was wondering if you could please send me one.
Thanks very much.
Yamato is Number 1 to this fan.
Bye now!
Tracy Lee Evans,
Philadelphia, PA
**By now you should have your card, as well as an explanation as to what happened to the bloody things. They're STILL bloody things, however, as I got one box that was printed absolutely correct, and the OTHER had the wrong PO Box on it (the zip code was wrong on BOTH boxes last time) and of course, I started mailing cards from the incorrect box without realizing it.
So MOST OF YOU PEOPLE WHO HAVE RECEIVED CARDS, HAVE THE WRONG PO BOX ON THERE! The darn things say P.O. Box 51592 and it should be P.O. Box 515942. When you renew your subscriptions (hint hint) and I have to do you a new card anyway, I'll make sure you get the completely correct ones. Now excuse me while I bomb a print shop.....
-kw**
"Dear Kelli:
Thanks soooo mcuh for the copy of Nova 14! I'd never seen a fanzine so professionally done. I didn't realize, or rather, I forgot Richard said he was going to submit my story. The two of us write the Alternate Universe Dirty Pair" stories all the time. There must be about 7 stories now.....
B.D. Banzai (Pam Buck),
Pinesalad Productions/Banzai Films"
** Just being courteous. I figured you'd never heard of us before Project A-Kon, and I wanted to justify our existance to you besides, your stuff appeared there, and you get a contributors copy for that. Glad you like! -kw**
"Kelli:
Hi! I hope you and everyone at the EDC are doing well.
It's time for me to renew my subscription and I just wanted to say a few things about Nova 14: The script of Dragon's Heaven was good, the City Hunter manga translation is great.
But the BEST was the Stranger Heart story. This one story I want to see more of. Other stories I would like to see back are: The New Dirty Pair, and Lt. Livewire & the Strawberry Scythe.
Well, I have to go now.
Thank you,
Tommy Yates,
Haughton, Louisiana"
**Thanks for the specific likes, Tommy. The artists will be very pleased. You see, these folks think nobody reads their stuff, and for them to get letters like yours really makes their day - and encourages them to do more stuff! Thanks for staying with us and we hope to give you many more hours of reading enjoyment in the future!
-kw**
"Kelli
...What happened to the sexy and vaguely feline critter from a couple of Novas (Novae?) back? (Cynderella Dunbarr?) I have apparently missed any further instalments or something. Hope to see some more soon. I'll have to look up my old Novas to see exactly the name of the series. I really liked the artwork that accompanied the story, if there are any large posters or art of that character available let me know (please remember that I'm still not rich yet)...
Daniel Meyer,
Princeton, TX
** Well Danny, see the letter right above yours to see the exact name of that series. And whomp on Guy Brownlee the next time you see him he decided to discontinue the series for reasons of his own. It's such a shame too, it was a really neat series and his ideas as he'd discussed with me were a real hoot! Maybe seeing some mucho feedback here will encourage him to start it back up again. The artwork was a combination of Lee Madison's basic designs with Guy's characters, a sort of collaboration. Neat, wasn't it? Take care! Don't fall off the Edge of the Universe!
-kw**
WARNING, A-KON LETTER APPROACHING. WARNING. A-KON LETTER APPROACH
** and YES, it's actually a letter from the same guy as wrote the last one! I just got this one first, but stuck it in after the other one cuz I felt like it! -kw**
Kelli, HI!!!
Great 'Con!! WOW! Neat, I like it. When's the next one? Next week? Just kidding... Soon tough, I hope. Seriously, your First 'Con was better than Bulldog's best. I really enjoyed it. It seemed to go real smooth, as all the demo's/panels I attended were actually there.
Thank you and everybody else involved for a great time!
Favorites? Hmmm...Amiga demo, Japanimayhem game intro, Lou Scarborough, video room, con suite .. not necessarily in that order. I didn't get to see nearly all of the panels, etc. though, and unfortunately, missed the costume contest and dance. I won't miss them the next time (the trigonometry got me).
I thought I'd let you know how it went from an attendee's perspective, as you seemed preoccupied the couple of times I got a chance to see you. I hope you survived!
Hmm..I hope the hotel survived also. I'll bet you didn't tell them that the con is the pseudo- namesake of a cute red-head that innocently trashes entire city blocks in the hours of her normal day.
GREAT video room. I haven't seen most of that stuff. I spent most of my time in there. If you can stand a suggestion on the video room, I have one that I'm surprised nobody has done/picked up. Building an approximately 3 foot tall platform for the TV to sit on would do wonders for the people watching it. It would be simple to build, only needing a couple sheets of plywood and some other odd lumber. If one wanted to get really fancy, a cabinet for the video equipment could be incorporated into the backside of the box.
I'll build it if you want it - I have millions and millions of power tools..well..power tools. anyway. I'm fairly handy when it comes to that sort of project. (I also have the odd lumber and hardware around)
And I suppose you wanna know the page no.? OK. Pg. 3
YES, IT'S REALLY...NOVA 15
[Letter continued from page three.]
Got to go. Believe it or not, I actually have to work two entire trig chapters before morning.
Like I said.. Great 'con, Great price, Great time.
nice tee shirts, too! Thanks,
Daniel Meyer
**Wow, what a Great load of Great comments! Seriously, the pallet to raise the TV didn't show up like it should've, even though the hotel was supposed to provide one, and since I didn't know about the problem, I couldn't fix it. I'm sure the vid crew would love to have a raised cabinet for equipment storage - especially in the light of 'wandering' tapes that has come up of late.
Just be sure the cabinet is strong enough to hold the big screen TV - we wouldn't want it caving in on someone's VCR. But if your offering, we'd certainly not turn you down, and in fact, we'd be seriously indebted to you - I know how much work that would be for you, and sincerly thank you for the offer.
Glad you enjoyed the con so much, and we do hope to see you at the next one (if I can muster the strength & capital to do it again).
"Howdy!
Please consider the enclosed story. "Invasion", for publication in Nova. If the length is inconvenient, please feel free to serialize it, print only the good parts, or send it back for rewrite. Hope this reaches you by the deadline for 15.
The Nova magazine has been steadily improving into an extremely sharp-looking professional production. The amount of care and effort expended on each issue is quite obvious. Congratulations! The glossy cover with high- calibre artwork is especially nice, and I was quite startled by the Manga Translation ("Good Lord, who submitted this! If I'm playing in this league I better try a fifth rewrite or I'll get laughed out of town!") The party-sized letter column was quite enjoyable, and I really did appreciate Ken Wolfe's comments.
Good luck with A-Kon!
See you there, hopefully!
Sincerely,
Richard Halada
**Yes Indeed, we did see Richard at A-Kon, though I didn't have to converse much with him, unfortunately. His work, always enjoyable reads, should be ap- pearing in this issue, space providing.

"An Open Letter From the Ozone Commandos
Today is the dawn of a new era. And, at that dawn, we stand at a crossroads.
Now, more than ever, Japanese animation is becoming a part of American culture. American organizations have become more willing and open to acceptance of such a new art form for this country.
Fan groups and conventions abound.
The future, as they say, looks bright.
But there is a seamy underside to such a falesly peaceful picture. There is a looming threat, a dark pit of despair that threatens to destroy the new dawn:
FAN GEEKS
Japanese animation is encroaching on the mainstream. But it needs strong, carefully controlled fan support. There must be an effort to allow the market to open up even more, and for the American fan society to gain a more favored status in the eyes of Japanse animation corporations.
The problem being that this "working together in a spirit of harmony and peace" crap isn't going to work when there are people out there who are nothing but anime black holes. They suck in all the Japanese merchandise they can lay their hands on, and give nothing back to the fan community. Their minds are so dense, not even thought can escape.
Do we want Japanese Animation fandom to be known as a bunch of mindless consumers, as a congregation of video morons who will watch anything with panty shots and explosions?
Here's what to do.
If you have anime, TRADE IT. Free.
If you attend conventions, make sure that you have everything you will need in the way of equipment - don't leech off others. Not only is this poopingly impolite, but it makes us look like incompetent and forgetful rejects....
Check your motivation for collecting Japanese animation. Are you only interested in those large-breasted Japanese women running around in kickass mecha crunching other kick- ass mecha with huge, overwhelmingly powerful guns and planet-busting ultra-death missiles?
This, of course, is the wrong reason. It's sad that fandom has degenerated to the point where you have to say things like that. Good animation does include action - lots of it--but that is no reason to love a series.
After all, American animation like Heavy Metal can through around blood and boobs with the best of them. It's the characterization and original stories that make Japanese stuff great. Without them, Akira would be Kid Kills Army Guys Admist Great Gouts of Blood. And what fun would that be?
If this sounds like a good title to you, then you're just a thrill-seeker who, within a year or so, will have moved on to something else that you find new and interesting. Japanese animation fandom does not need "instant gratification" jerks; it needs fans that love anime and will continue to love it.
We're not saying that you have to shave your head and become an anime monk (however, that would be a good idea).
All you have to do is realize why you like the anime, and why it's better than comparable (well, not really) American stuff.
Practice logical restraint. Be an intelligent, functioning human being willing to change and sacrifice a little of your time for other fans.
That way, the Japanese corporations who make the movies and OAVS you like will see that fans can be reasonable, and a good market to open up to. After all, the final goal is spreading the anime dawn, right?
Don't buy pirated video tapes. That is possibly the stupidest thing a fan can do; pay money for a movie, simultaneously losing cash and creating an atmosphere of wrongful competition that Japanese companies won't want to enter.
And, oh yeah, IT'S DAMN WELL ILLEGAL. That slipped my mind.
After all, the tapes you get are probably not better quality than the tapes you can get (absolutely free) from trading fan groups.
Often, they are worse. Besides, what's the harm of at least trying to get a free copy to see if it's the level of quality you want?
It is, as the name implies rather obviously, free.
Quit trying to impress everyone with your awesome knowledge of Japanese animation. Countless times, new fans have attempted to tell everyone the "real story behind what's being shown at a convention or meeting or wherever and, inevitably they get it wrong. If you don't know what's going on, then stop trying to make others think you do.
And, while you're at it, quit trying to impress the world with your fantastic video collection. We are sick and tired of hearing the latest "anime god" brag about the awesome videos he has at home-which he, for some strange reason, cannot copy for anyone else. So you have 100 tapes. Big Deal! Somewhere, there's a guy or gal who has 200 tapes! or 300 or 500 tapes! We're not into Japanese animation to feed our egos! Chill out!
So, basically, don't be stupid.
That unfortunately seems very hard for some fans, which is a real shame.
It'd be nice if we could share the spoils with everybody. But if you're not part of the solution, then you are most definitely part of the problem.
Get out now before the fans who are willing to give decide that they really, really hate you.
Or change.
Threats usually aren't effective and only generate more rebellion, but there's nothing else that can be done. The dawn has been too long delayed by apathetic, uncaring anime geeks. Once they are cleared out or converted to the ranks of those working to keep anime alive in this country, then the light will shine.
So, be a fan! Publish a fanzine! Trade tapes! Copy anime for someone who doesn't have any! Draw some pictures! Write an article or a review! Join a club! Start a club! Write letters to other fans! Join an APA! Anything, except sit around and suckin animation like a bad Disney movie!
Put something back into the field. Make animation high-quality, high-speed, and highly available to everyone.
Be cool. Don't be an idiot, moron, geek, leech, goob, poophead, black hole, or any other form of uncaring, inactive jerk. Anyway."

Nova, Shonen, Whispers
Reviewed in Factsheet 5
Factsheet 5, a nationally-distributed "zine-zine" full of reviews of zines from around the world, reviewed our three EDC zines in the 12 December '90 issue. Jacob Rabinowitz, a staff reviewer for FS5, had this to say about Nova #14: "Journal for the Japanimation fanatic.
Info on how to trade tapes pirated (sic) from Japanese TV, and (mostly) art and stories/scripts relating to favorire characters. A pleasant by way of SF, lovingly explored." As for EDC's comics zine, "...serialized cartoon adventures very much in the Japanese style: big-eyed, noseless little manikins with cute hair and highly- draped hod-bods, big robot things, &c.
Not very meaningful for folks who haven't been following the various SF soap-operas enclosed." Finally, Rabinowitz named Whispers "...mostly a
listing of animation fan groups across the country, this [issue] included an exuberant account of the first National Animation Convention, which hosted many celebrity animators and was enlivened by ice-cube fights, gummi-worm hurling, fun with ashtrays, and reprimands by hotel staff."
EDC Publications Chief Kelli Wakefield is happy with the reviews, reporting an increase in mail from across North America requesting info on EDC and its publications.
